Founded in the Spring of 2018, OOTE41221 is a multimodal arts space nestled in the outskirts of Matsumoto Castle, one of Japan’s national treasures complete in original form and pride of the region’s culture, which has culminated from centuries of various disciplinary crafts.
Artist in residence
Our facility repurposes a 100-year-old rice-cake baker’s shop and residency, two-storied furnished with a central gallery area, adjoined by two modest workspaces on the ground level. The second floor is the residency level consisting of three tatami rooms and a lounge area with wooden flooring. Our location is situated within the city center and is accessible to most sites within a short walk.
Matsumoto is a rich cultural hub birthing from its medieval past and incorporating contemporary aesthetics, a music, and arts city.
It is known as the birthplace and home to Yayoi Kusama, who has a permanent collection housed in the Matsumoto City Museum of Art. There is an annual classic music festival, The Seiji Ozawa Matsumoto Festival, and the annual Crafts Fair in May, which showcases works nationally and worldwide with an impressive collection of traditional and contemporary crafts. There is so much to explore beyond the city; the surrounding magnificent Japanese Alps with abundant natural resources, fresh well water that runs throughout the city limits, and a community that stands by its environmental wisdom.
